Learn more about the course GUE Basic Fundamentals

Some divers use the Fundamentals course as a way to improve their skills and systematize their knowledge. Others see this training as a ticket to participate in GUE projects. Many technical divers and even experienced instructors from other organizations take their Fundies because they want to improve their basic skills and/or access cave and technical training with GUE.

Each GUE course includes a swimming test. In this case, it is:

  • 275m swim in up to 14 minutes.
  • 15m underwater on breath hold.

A diver with a GUE Performance Diver certificate can take an abbreviated version of the GUE Basic Fundamentals course, completing elements of the training that they have not previously completed.

With the new adaptive GUE Mastery Learning learning platform, you can start learning theory at your own pace as soon as you sign up for the class. The instructor will have insight into your progress and, if necessary, will explain you the most problematic issues. Thanks to this solution, during in-water sessions, you will spend more time on practicing and using your knowledge in real conditions.

Theory topics in the GUE Basic Fundamentals course:

  • Global Underwater Explorers – history and training system
  • Basic diving skills: buoyancy, trim and balance, and propulsion techniques.
  • Equipment configuration and optimization.
  • Situational awareness.
  • Dive planning and gas management.
  • Breathing gas dynamics.
  • Nitrox diving.
  • Introduction to decompression procedures and the Minimum Deco principles.
  • Diving safety and accident prevention.

During the training, you will master the key skills necessary for safe and efficient diving. The practical training focuses on precise mastery of your equipment, diving techniques and safety procedures that are the foundation of your further diving development.

Scope of practical training:

Equipment configuration.

  • Equipment adjustments and personalising
  • Breathing gas management .
  • Gas analysis and marking.

Buoyancy control , trim and balance.

  • Stability.
  • Precise buoyancy control – maintaining a stable position in various situations,
  • Dynamic buoyancy control – variable ascent speed and ability to keep stops at target depths.

Advanced propulsion techniques

  • Effective propulsion techniques: frog kick, flutter kick and their modifications.
  • Manoeuvring: back kick and helicopter turn.
  • Reducing effort and gas consumption when swimming.

Teamwork and safety.

  • Teamwork in GUE diving – effective communication and team coordination.
  • Emergency management.
  • Emergency gas sharing procedures.
  • Emergency ascent in the depths with minimal decompression.
  • Valve drill.
  • Correct use of the surface marker buoy (SMB) .

Introduction to Gas Management

  • Theory and practical application of nitrox in recreational diving.
  • Introduction to GUE standard gas mixtures.
  • Conscious planning and execution of a dve plan.

The practical part of the course consist of several intensive sessions in the water, where the exercises are gradually developed to ensure that participants fully master the critical skills. The instructor analyzes and corrects mistakes on an ongoing basis, which allows you to quickly improve your technique and build good diving habits.

What are the benefits of completing the GUE Basic Fundamentals course?

Regardless of your current level of training, the GUE Basic Fundamentals course will help you improve your diving technique and expand knowledge. We focus on refining key individual and team skills, taking care of the finest details.

If you decide to pursue technical or cave training in the future, having a GUE Basic Fundamentals certification will allow you to take a shortened version of the Technical Fundamentals course instead of attending the full program.

Thirdly – the GUE Fundamentals level is necessary to take part in many GUE projects .

Where does the training take place?

Here we can be quite flexible. We can carry out this training in our area (Gdańsk and Tricity). We also regularly teach in other places in Poland or abroad. Contact us and we will certainly choose the right place 🙂

How to prepare for the course?

Be sure to contact us and sign up for the course early enough to have time to do the theory on your own (you need about 7 hours to do this). Check the requirements for GUE equipment configuration and adjust your equipment accordingly. Master buoyancy control as much as possible. We will work on this during the training, but the more stable you are, the easier it will be for you to progress faster during the course.

Do I have enough experience to take this course?

You only need basic training to take this training. If you want to take the GUE Basic Fundamentals course in a twinset and/or dry suit configuration, you should first gain some experience in a given configuration (minimum 15 dives), or take the GUE Doubles Primer (twinset) or Drysuit Primer (dry suit) training.

If you still don’t feel confident or just want to break this training down into several smaller parts, then you may want to consider the GUE Performance Diver training.

Is it true that I can fail this training?

The GUE standards are unambiguous. If a diver does not meet the minimum requirements for passing a given class, unfortunately they cannot receive the certification immediately.

No worries. If you fail the training, you will get the time necessary to practice, correct what you missed and take the evaluation day in the future.

What makes this training different?

For most divers, the first training in GUE is the moment when everything finally starts to fall into place. “Fundies” is a course where every diver will improve their skills and competences.
During the course, we pay attention to the finest details.

A solid foundation is the most important component of responsible diving.
