The course is divided into three consecutive parts: 1. Navigation and diving in limited visibility (including night diving). 2. Rescue – diving rescue (prevention, underwater and surface rescue techniques, rescue action management and oxygen first aid). 3. Diving up to 30m using Nitrox 32 or Triox 30/30 (optional).

Learn more about the course GUE Advanced Open Water Diver (Rec2)

GUE AOWD is a six-day program that is designed to expand your diving competence to an advanced level. In your previous GUE training, you learned basic safety skills and procedures. During the GUE Advanced Open Water Diver training, you will see why a solid foundation is so important. We will practice complex navigation using a compass, a guideline as well as natural navigation. After mastering these techniques, we will start practicing navigation skills in practice – in limited visibility and during night diving. The next step will be diving rescue module. It’s a series of exercises and scenarios, both underwater and on land. As part of the course, you will learn skills such as searching for a missing diver, safe ascent with an unconscious diver, conducting a rescue action on the surface, including oxygen first aid. The last stage of the training is responsible diving to a depth of 30m. During the course, you can dive breathing with a mixture of Triox 30/30 containing 30% oxygen and 30% helium. The use of triox significantly reduces the effect of narcosis and reduces respiratory effort.

Each GUE course includes a swimming test. In this case, it is:

  • 275m swim in up to 14 minutes.
  • 15m underwater on breath hold.

During the training, practical classes will be alternated with lectures on navigation, rescue and deep diving.

Examples of theory topics in the GUE Advanced Open Water Diver course :

  • Introduction
  • Breathing gas dynamics
  • Diving physiology
  • Situational awareness
  • Dive planning, gas management and logistics
  • Introduction to trimix diving
  • Decompression and minimum deco procedures
  • Diving safety and accident prevention
  • Diving rescue techniques, emergency management, and oxygen first aid

During this training, you will master key skills such as:

  • advanced navigation using a compass,
  • linework,
  • planning and performing night dives,
  • methods of underwater search,
  • rescue techniques – both underwater and on the surface,
  • oxygen first aid,
  • planning and performing dives to a depth of 30 m with the use of Nitrox 32 or Triox 30/30, with minimal decompression,
  • responding to emergencies.

What are the benefits of completing the GUE Advanced Open Water Diver (REC2) course

With the skills you have acquired at Rec2 level, you will increase your confidence and safety in the water. You will be able to respond more effectively to problems and potential threats. Navigation, diving in limited visibility, planning and executing safe dives up to 30 m will not be a problem for you.

The skills gained during the Rec2 course are useful in many diving projects, e.g. related to searching or documenting. Completion of the GUE Advanced Open Water Diver course is also required to take the GUE Rec3 (Master Diver – Recreational Trimix) training and provides solid preparation for the GUE Technical Fundamentals class.

Can the training be divided into several parts?

Yes! In fact, the GUE Rec2 training consists of three separate modules:

  • GUE Navigation Primer
  • GUE Rescue Primer
  • GUE Deep Primer

Each of them is a stand-alone, two-day program. If you want to spread your training over time, you can complete it in three independent sessions.

How to prepare for the course?

Before starting the training, it is worth refreshing your skills and knowledge from the GUE Open Water Diver (Rec1), Basic Fundamentals or Performance Diver level. Make sure you have full control over your buoyancy and can maintain a stable position underwater.

If you plan to take the Rec2 course in a twinset and/or dry suit configuration, it is especially important that you feel comfortable in this equipment and operate it freely. Good preparation will make learning easier for you and allow you to fully focus on developing new skills.

Do I have enough experience to take this course?

Before starting the course, you should do at least 15 dives after your Rec1, Fundamentals Basic or Performance Diver training. If you are also going to do this training in a new configuration (twinset or drysuit), it is advisable to do the appropriate preparatory training (GUE Doubles Primer and/or GUE Drysuit Primer) first.

Is it true that I can fail this training?

The GUE standards are unambiguous. If a diver does not meet the minimum requirements for passing a given training, unfortunately they cannot receive the certification immediately.

No worries. If you fail the training, you will get the time necessary to practice, correct what you missed and take the exam at a different time.

What makes this training different?

GUE Advanced Open Water Diver (Rec2) Course is more than a typical AOWD training. The program is distinguished by a comprehensive approach to your development, emphasizing the precise buoyancy control, stability and effective teamwork.

Key features of the course:
Modular structure – the possibility to divide the training into three modules: Navigation Primer, Rescue Primer and Deep Primer.
Advanced navigation skills – learning to use a compass and a reel, natural navigation and optionally navigation on wrecks.
Rescue techniques – procedures for responding to emergency situations, both underwater and on the surface.
Minimal decompression – plan and perform dives to a depth of 30 m using Nitrox 32 or Triox 30/30.
Strong focus on stability and standardization – excellent buoyancy control, team procedures and situational awareness.

Rec2 training is the perfect preparation for more advanced diving courses such as GUE Rec3 or GUE Technical Fundamentals. With this program, you become a more conscious and responsible diver, ready for even greater challenges!
