U-boots (Ger. Unterseeboot, U-Boot) were submarines used extensively by the German Navy during the First and Second World Wars. U-boats terrified and fascinated with their tactics and effectiveness. The crew of each U-boat, however, knew how much risk their service entailed. More than 20 U-Boats have sunk or gone missing in Baltic waters along the Polish coastline. U-Boot Week is an initiative of the GUE divers in Poland. During our dives, we wanted to document and better understand the history of these iconic wrecks. Our aim was also to promote diving in the Baltic Sea among divers from outside of Poland.
WRECKS
During the period 7-10 July 2023, we performed series of dives on the following submarines:
ORP Ślązak: (warmup dive)
U-272: (so called ‘shallow U-boot’)
U-768: (wreck in a proximity of Krynica Morska)
U-367: (so called broken U-boot)
During the dives, we collected photo/video material, photogrammetry of some of the characteristic elements and collected documentation of the ghost nets lying on the wrecks.
