GUE Technical Fundamentals

Introduction to the Global Underwater Explorers system for advanced divers. Get ready for technical and cave diving.

The GUE Fundamentals Tech training is addressed to divers who want to improve their skills and knowledge and prepare for technical, cave and rebreather training. GUE’s high standards guarantee the development of individual and team competencies at the highest level. “Fundies” are also a gateway to participation in diving projects organized by Global Underwater Explorers.

GUE Technical Fundamentals

Some divers use the Fundamentals course as a way to improve their skills and systematize their knowledge. Others see this training as a ticket to participate in GUE projects. Many technical divers and even experienced instructors from other organizations take their Fundies because they want to improve their basic skills and/or access cave and technical training with GUE.

The main areas we will be working on are:

  • Improving basic diving skills – stability, precise buoyancy control, position (trim and balance), advanced propulsion techniques.
  • Safety procedures including underwater rescue skills.
  • Teamwork and communication.
  • Introduction to pragmatic decompression.
  • Preparation for future technical courses (e.g. GUE Tech 1)

A diver with a GUE Performance Diver or GUE Basic Fundamentals certificate can take a shorter version of the GUE Technical Fundamentals course, completing modules of the training that haven’t been covered.

Limits during the course:

  • Maximum depth: 30 m.
  • All dives take place in open water.
  • All dives must be within the minimum deco limits, i.e. no required decompression stops.

Each GUE course includes a swimming test. In this case, it is:

  • 275m swim in up to 14 minutes.
  • 15m underwater on breath hold.

With the new adaptive GUE Mastery Learning learning platform, you can start learning theory at your own pace as soon as you sign up for the class. The instructor will have insight into your progress and, if necessary, will explain you the most problematic issues. Thanks to this solution, during in-water sessions, you will spend more time on practicing and using your knowledge in real conditions.

The theory topics in the GUE Technical Fundamentals course are:

  • Global Underwater Explorers – history and training system
  • Basic diving skills: buoyancy, trim and balance, and propulsion techniques.
  • Equipment configuration and optimization.
  • Situational awareness.
  • Dive planning and gas management.
  • Breathing gas dynamics.
  • Nitrox diving.
  • Introduction to decompression procedures and the Minimum Deco principles.
  • Diving safety and accident prevention.

During the training, you will master: standard configuration and functionality of GUE equipment, perfect trim and buoyancy, advanced propulsion techniques, principles of teamwork. Safety procedures are also an important element . We will practice for example sharing gas in an emergency situation along with ascent, carrying out minimal decompression without reference and signaling the place of ascent with an SMB.
An additional element of the training are underwater rescue skills.

Here is a list of the most important practical modules that we will cover during the course:

  • Optimized equipment configurations.
  • Advanced propulsion and maneuvering techniques.
  • Gas analysis and marking.
  • GUE EDGE – pre-dive control.
  • Basic 5 diving skills (Basic 5).
  • Team diving – techniques and procedures.
  • S-drill (out-of-gas simulations in various scenarios).
  • V-drill (conscious valve manipulation on a twinset).
  • Backup light deployment.
  • SMB deployment.
  • Ascent techniques and minimum deco procedures.
  • Rescue skills, including handling an unconscious diver underwater.

The course also includes theory and practice in the use of nitrox and an introduction to other standard gases used by GUE.

What are the benefits of completing a GUE Technical Fundamentals course?

No matter what level of training you start with, we guarantee that you will improve your diving techniques and expand your knowledge. During the course, we focus on details in the area of individual and team skills.

After receiving the GUE Fundamentals Tech certificate, you will receive access to participate in more advanced GUE trainings such as: Tech1, Cave1 or CCR Fundamentals.

Thirdly – the GUE Fundamentals level is necessary to take part in many GUE projects .

Where does the training take place?

Here we can be quite flexible. We can carry out this training in our area (Gdańsk and Tricity). We also regularly teach in other places in Poland or abroad. Contact us and we will certainly choose the right place 🙂

How to prepare for the course?

Master buoyancy control and trim as much as possible. We will also work on this during the training, but the more stable you are in the water, the easier it will be for you to progress further on the course.

It is also worth checking your range of motion and access to the valves. If you are not able to reach the valves or operate them freely, contact us. We will diagnose the cause and advise you on what to do to solve it 🙂

Do I have enough experience to take this course?

If you already have experience in twinset diving (25 or more dives) and feel stable in the water, this is a good time to enroll in this course.

If you feel like you have big deficiencies, no experience in twin diving, or just want to break this training down into several smaller parts, you may want to consider the GUE Performance Diver or GUE Basic Fundamentals training.

Is it true that I can fail this training?

The GUE standards are unambiguous. If a diver does not meet the minimum requirements for passing a given class, unfortunately they cannot receive the certification immediately.

No worries. If you fail the training, you will get the time necessary to practice, correct what you missed and take the evaluation day in the future.

What makes this training different?

For most divers, the first training in GUE is the moment when everything finally starts to fall into place. “Fundies” is a course where every diver will improve their skills and competences.
During the course, we pay attention to the finest details.

A solid foundation is the most important element of preparation for technical, cave or project diving.
