Learn more about the course GUE Rescue Primer

The GUE Rescue Primer is an intensive course introducing rescue techniques that can prove crucial in emergency situations both underwater and on the surface. The training focuses on the skills necessary to respond effectively to problems such as loss of consciousness, running out of gas, or symptoms of decompression sickness. The course is addressed to divers at all levels who want to acquire or expand their skills in emergency management and increase their underwater safety.

Training limits:

  • Maximum depth: 18m
  • No overhead environment
  • All dives are within the minimum deco limits (no mandatory decompression stops).

The rescue course is one of the requirements to receive the GUE Cave1 and/or GUE Tech1 certification.

Each GUE course includes a swimming test. In this case, it is:

  • 275m swim in up to 14 minutes.
  • 15m underwater on breath hold.

The theoretical module covers key issues related to diving rescue, including:

  • Identification and assessment of potential hazards underwater and on the surface.
  • The basics of the psychology of stress and panic, and how to manage them.
  • Strategies for responding to the most common emergencies, including procedures for dealing with a partner’s loss of consciousness.
  • Diving physiology, including decompression sickness and pressure injuries.
  • Basic principles of first aid and rescue operation management.

Lectures allow participants to better understand the causes of diving problems and prepare for their effective solution in the water.

Practical part of the course includes both surface and underwater exercises, during which participants will have the opportunity to practice:

  • Teamwork.
  • Gas loss simulations and emergency ascents.
  • Missing diver search.
  • Bringing an unconscious diver to the surface.
  • Procedures related to an injured diver on the surface.
  • Oxygen first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation.

The exercises are conducted in realistic scenarios to best prepare divers for potential emergencies.

Do I have to dive in a twinset configuration and use drysuit during this training?

No. The GUE Rescue Primer training program will be tailored to your current level of training and the configuration you are using – single tank or twinset + drysuit or wetsuit.

Do I need to do the GUE Navigation Primer training before this course?

You don’t have to, but we strongly recommend you to do so. During the Rescue training, you will need skills in the field of navigation and conducting underwater search.

Do I need to have previous experience in dive rescue?

No, the GUE Rescue Primer is an introductory course, so no previous experience in dive rescue is required. However, to join the course, it is necessary to have a valid certificate in basic first aid and CPR, e.g. DAN Basic Life Support (BLS).

Is the training very physically demanding?

The GUE Rescue Primer course requires you to be in good physical condition due to some exercises and simulated rescues. However, it is not extremely demanding – the instructor will adapt the exercises and scenarios to the physical abilities of individual participants.

How to prepare for this training?

Revise the procedures and knowledge from your previous GUE courses. During the training, you will use the previously acquired skills many times. Your stability in the water is especially important – to effectively help someone in need, you must first be able to move freely in the water and control your buoyancy.
