Learn more about the course GUE Navigation Primer

The GUE Navigation Primer training will introduce you to underwater navigation techniques, allow you to feel more confident in more demanding conditions – for example, during night diving.

  • Maximum depth during training: 18 meters.
  • No overhead environment
  • All dives must be within the minimum deco limits, i.e. no required decompression stops.

The key skills and knowledge you will gain include:

  • using a compass (simple and complicated navigation),
  • using a reel and a spool,
  • natural navigation,
  • underwater search techniques,
  • light communication and diving in the dark (night diving),
  • optional: mapping techniques, e.g. wrecks.

The GUE Navigation Primer is one of the three modules of the GUE Advanced Open Water Diver (Rec2) training.

Each GUE course includes a swimming test. In this case, it is:

  • 275m swim in up to 14 minutes.
  • 15m underwater on breath hold.

During the training, you will learn theoretical issues related to underwater navigation. We will discuss topics such as:

  • Introduction to underwater navigation
  • Situational awareness during difficult navigation
  • Compass – design, operation, navigation techniques
  • Use of line for navigation and/or mapping
  • Searching methods
  • Natural (environmental) navigation

The GUE Navigation Primer course focuses mainly on practical exercises. During the training, participants will master skills such as:

  • Buoyancy, position and maneuvering techniques in a silty environment
  • Compass navigation – both simple and complex routes
  • Operating with a spool and reel – linework
  • Underwater search
  • Wreck diving techniques, including wreck search and placing a jump line and the use of a strobe to mark the shotline
  • Surface marker buoy (SMB) use
  • Optional: make a simple map of a dive site
Do I need to know anything about underwater navigation to take this course?

No. This training is just for you to learn underwater navigation using various tools.

How to prepare for the training?

Be sure to repeat all the procedures you have learned during your GUE OWD (Rec1), Performance Diver or Fundamentals training. Mastering buoyancy, position, and movement techniques will help you navigate underwater effectively. Take the time to achieve stability in the water before starting the course.

Do I need additional pieces of equipment?

During the training, we will use the basic configuration of GUE. Additional equipment includes:

  • Primary light with a Goodman handle
  • At least one backup light
  • One primary reel per team
