SS Lina – Photogrammetry Project

Krnica, Croatia

14.11.2026
- 15.11.2026

SS Lina is an over a hundred-year-old wreck of a steamship, resting in the Adriatic Sea at a depth of 28-55 m. During our project, we want to prepare an accurate 3D model of the wreck and a detailed video documentation.

The wreck of the SS Lina is one of the most impressive diving sites in the northern Adriatic. This more than a hundred years old steamer rests on a steep underwater slope near the Croatian coast, at a depth of about 28 to 55 meters. The aim of the project is to create a high-quality 3D model of the wreck using photogrammetry and to prepare comprehensive video documentation. By combining modern documentation technologies with technical diving, we want to preserve a digital record of the current state of the wreck, allowing both divers and those interested in marine history to explore it virtually. The project includes a series of documentary dives, during which thousands of photos will be collected and then used to reconstruct a three-dimensional model of the wreck. The end result will be a detailed visualization of the wreck of the SS Lina, which is a valuable source of information for the diving community, researchers and history enthusiasts.

SS Lina – GUE Photogrammetry Project

About the project

The SS Lina is a steamship that is over a hundred years old, which after a sea disaster settled on the bottom of the Adriatic near the coast of the island of Cres. Today, the wreck rests at a depth of about 28 to 55 meters and is one of the most recognizable diving facilities in the region.

Despite its popularity among divers, there has not yet been a complete, high-resolution digital documentation of the entire wreck. The aim of the SS Lina – Photogrammetry Project is to create an accurate 3D model of the wreck and professional video documentation, allowing it to preserve its current condition for future generations.

Project objectives

The main objectives of the project include:

  • making full photographic documentation of the wreck using the photogrammetry method,
  • creating a detailed 3D model enabling virtual exploration of the object,
  • documenting the current state of preservation of the structure,
  • preparation of video materials presenting the wreck and the course of the project,
  • development of underwater documentation methods used by technical divers,
  • popularization of the maritime history of the Adriatic region.

SS Lina – Photogrammetry Project - Details

Why is what we do important?

Shipwrecks are unique underwater historical sites that are constantly influenced by the marine environment. Corrosion, human activity and natural biological processes cause gradual changes in their structure.

Digital documentation allows you to preserve the image of the wreck at a specific moment in its history, allowing for subsequent comparisons, analyses and the use of the material for educational and popularization purposes.

Participation in the project

The project is aimed at divers interested in underwater documentation, maritime history and the use of modern technologies in wreck exploration. Participants will have the opportunity to gain practical experience related to the planning and implementation of underwater photogrammetric projects on a large, historic shipwreck.

  • For the implementation of this project, we are primarily looking for divers trained at GUE Tech 1, GUE CCR Tech 1 or higher level.
  • If you are a GUE Fundamentals (or GUE AOWD) diver, you can also make a significant contribution to the success of the project by participating in documentation, team support and selected underwater tasks.
  • Not a GUE diver but interested in participating in a project? Contact us. We would be happy to discuss your experience and opportunities to get involved in the project.

Do you want to arrive early for warm-up dives?

Join us!

From 8 to 13 November, we are conducting the GUE Technical Diver 1 training on site. Although all places on the course are already taken, there is an opportunity to join our dive group and participate in dives on other wrecks in the area.

This is a great opportunity to familiarize yourself with the local conditions, check out the equipment, do a few acclimatization dives and spend more time underwater even before the SS Lina Photogrammetry Project begins.

If you are interested in arriving earlier, please contact us – we will be happy to help you organize additional dives.

Logistics

Diving logistics will be organized by the Krnicadive diving center.

Approximate costs charged by Krnicadive:

  • Boat: 80 EUR per person
  • Nitrox 32 (twinset 2×12): 20 EUR (full twinset)
  • Nitrox 50 (deco): 10 EUR (full cylinder)
  • Trimix 21/35 (twinset 2×12): about 110-120 EUR (depending on the gas consumed)
  • Trimix 18/45 (twinset 2×12): about 135-145 EUR (depending on the gas consumed)
